A micro-article to help you instantly enhance your networking.
You were likely going to invest one to two minutes reading my blog post. The reading is just to help you know what to do, so for this article, we’ll get right to the action. Take the time you would have spent reading my article this week and do the following.
Think of three people you haven't talked to in a while. A “while” is up to you. It could be months, years, or even decades. Reach out to them with the following message, or one you create yourself:
Hi <name>,
It’s been a few years since we last spoke, and I was just thinking about you. Let’s get together for a coffee or find a time to catch up by phone. It’s been too long, and I want to see how you’re doing.
That's it. So this week instead of reading about networking or some other skill, I want you to actually do networking by strengthening relationships (including those old acquaintance be forgot). No agenda, nothing to sell, just reconnect with someone you haven’t talked to in a while.
For extra credit, put an event on your calendar that recurs every three months with a link to this article or just the words, “Reach back out to 3 people I haven’t spoken to in a while.” Good luck and good networking!
It’s critical to learn about corporate culture before you accept a job offer but it can be awkward to raise such questions. Learn what to ask and how to ask it to avoid landing yourself in a bad situation.
Investing just a few hours per year will help you focus and advance in your career.
